Western Australia
Western Australia generated 8.68 million tonnes of waste in the latest reporting period and achieved an overall resource recovery rate of 69.9%. The municipal solid waste (MSW) sector generated 1.39 million tonnes of waste, with 36% recovered. The commercial and industrial (C&I) sector generated 2.11 million tonnes, achieving a 56% recovery rate, while the construction and demolition (C&D) sector generated 3.30 million tonnes and achieved an 85% recovery rate. Based on the most recent available economic assessment, the waste and resource recovery sector contributes $724 million to the Western Australian economy annually and employs more than 5,070 people. WMRR represents more than 180 individual members from over 35 organisations across Western Australia.
The Western Australian waste levy is $90 per tonne for putrescible waste and $136 per cubic metre for inert waste.
WMRR STATE INITIATIVES
- Advocate for the finalisation of the levy review, including legislative changes to enable proposed allocation of levy monies.
- Advocate for the progression and finalisation of a consistent and certain resource recovery framework to ensure policy and regulatory pathways enable the circulation of secondary raw materials
- Advocate for the procurement of secondary raw materials content at all levels of government and market development.
