Queensland
Queensland generated 14.8 million tonnes of waste in the latest reporting period. The municipal solid waste (MSW) sector generated 2.66 million tonnes of waste, with 37% recovered. The commercial and industrial (C&I) sector generated 3.71 million tonnes, achieving a 57% recovery rate, while the construction and demolition (C&D) sector generated 2.73 million tonnes and achieved an 82% recovery rate. Based on the most recent available economic assessment, the waste and resource recovery sector contributes $2.02 billion to the Queensland economy annually and employs more than 10,290 people. WMRR represents more than 380 individual members from over 50 organisations across Queensland.
The Waste levy for 2026-27 is $135 in metro areas, and $100 for regional areas.
WMRR STATE INITIATIVES
- Advocate for robust state policy and regulatory frameworks, including how pathways can be improved to take waste back to a resource, and market development agency in place.
- Advocate for a consistent state wide education plan that raises awareness of the importance of WARR facilities and implications of consumption choices that lead to the creation of waste.
- Advocate for sustainable state and local government procurement of products that include secondary raw materials.
Procurement policies to include targets and reporting, collaborate with LGAQ to drive council procurement of secondary raw materials. - Advocate for a strategic state infrastructure strategy that articulates how infrastructure is delivered and planned, site availability, streamlining, and forward planning of infrastructure delivery with government support
