Tasmania
Tasmania generated 1.07 million tonnes of waste in the latest reporting period and achieved an overall resource recovery rate of 55.4%. The municipal solid waste (MSW) sector generated 227,816 tonnes of waste, with 43% recovered. The commercial and industrial (C&I) sector generated 405,219 tonnes, achieving a 44% recovery rate, while the construction and demolition (C&D) sector generated 200,257 tonnes and achieved a 63% recovery rate. Based on the most recent available economic assessment, the waste and resource recovery sector contributes $147 million to the Tasmanian economy annually and employs more than 1,150 people. WMRR represents more than 60 individual members from over a dozen organisations across Tasmania.

STATE INITIATIVES
- Ensure that WMRR is the first port of call for the state government as it finalises policy and regulatory initiatives, including the state waste minimisation and resource recovery strategy, in order to build a robust strategic framework to leverage plans, including the education and communications to drive and support the growth of the Tasmanian WARR sector.
- Advocate for the development of diversion and recovery facilities, as well as the expansion of organics diversion and processing across Tasmania.
- Tasmanian wide education and communications plan developed and delivered.
