Nominations open for WMRR Board of Directors

The Waste Management and Resource Recovery Association of Australia (WMRR) is a CEO-led, not-for-profit membership organisation governed by a Board of directors. This year, the Board is undergoing a process of renewal, with a number of Directors reaching their maximum four (4) year terms.

As such, we are now calling for nominations from WMRR financial members for both the nominated and two (2) elected Director positions, including for the role of WMRR Vice President and the members’ elected Director. A maximum of three (3) director positions in total are available.

The Board’s responsibilities

The Board is responsible for the provision of strategic direction to, and governance of, the Association. Board positions are voluntary, and the Board meets for a maximum of half a day, six (6) times a year (reasonable travel and accommodation costs will be met).

WMRR Directors, with the exception of PEAK Directors, serve a two (2)-year term and are eligible for re-election or re-appointment for a maximum of two (2) consecutive terms.

Who we are looking for

WMRR is the national peak body representing Australia’s $15.8 billion waste and resource recovery (WARR) industry. With more than 2,200 members from over 400 entities nationwide, we represent the breadth and depth of our essential industry.

WMRR's mission is to continue to provide the peak national forum to foster the necessary structural and cultural changes within our membership to enable the WARR industry to respond to these demands. WMRR's structure reflects the unique nature of Australia's regulatory environment, operating in every state and nationally, as well as providing technical working groups for members to respond to industry challenges and opportunities, share knowledge, and collaborate to drive improvement for and within our industry.

Thus, the composition of WMRR’s Board aims to:

  • Embrace inclusivity and diversity.
  • Include directors who are active WMRR members who participate in, and contribute to our initiatives, whether that’s our branch committees, working groups, or events.
  • Represent all of Australia to provide national coverage.
  • Comprise directors who have a broad set of skills and experience in order to bring to the table insight and knowledge of the breadth and depth of WARR activities, including (but not limited to) infrastructure investment and operations, collection, remanufacturing, recycling, resource recovery, energy recovery, community engagement and education, as well as government policy and operations.

Elected Directors and Vice President

Elected Directors, including the Vice President, will be elected by members, with the outcome of any necessary elections announced at the 2024 AGM on 25 June 2024.

Nominations of candidates must be in writing and must include a signature or relevant acknowledgement from two (2) current financial WMRR members; if a nomination is made on behalf of the nominee, the application must be accompanied by written consent of the nominee.

To apply, you will need:

  • Provide a 200-word summary outlining your key attributes and what you will bring to the role.
  • Provide a current CV.

Nominations received will be reviewed by the Board Nominations Committee against the eligibility criteria.

In the event that there is more than one (1) eligible candidate for the Vice President role or the members’ elect Director role, then a membership vote will be held in April 2024.

Nominated Directors

WMRR is also calling for nominations for skills-based nominated Directors who will be appointed by the WMRR nominations committee ahead of the 2024 AGM.

Nominations of candidates must be in writing and must include a signature or relevant acknowledgement from two (2) current financial WMRR members; if a nomination is made on behalf of the nominee, the application must be accompanied by written consent of the nominee.

Nominees must:

  • Address a range of required and desirable eligibility criteria on this form.
  • Provide a 200-word summary outlining your key attributes and what you will bring to the role.
  • Provide a current CV.

How to submit a nomination

All financial WMRR members may self-nominate with the endorsement of two (2) proposers who are also current financial members of WMRR. Applicants can apply for any or all positions.

  1. Complete the appropriate nomination form – elected Director, elected Vice President, nominated Skilled Director.
  2. Provide a 200-word summary outlining your key attributes and what you will bring to the proposed role of WMRR nominated and/or elected director and/or elected vice president.
  3. Provide a current CV.

All forms and documents must be emailed to Romany Maunder at [email protected] by no later than 5pm AEDT on Thursday, 21 March 2024. Nominations after this date and incomplete nominations will not be considered.

Successful nominated and elected Directors will take office for a term of two (2) years, commencing at the WMRR AGM, which will be held on Tuesday, 25 June 2024. Directors are able to re-nominate at the end of their two (2)-year terms but may not hold office for more than four (4) consecutive years.

Only financial WMRR members are able to nominate for these positions or propose a suitable candidate. If you would like to nominate but have not renewed your WMRR membership for 2024, please contact the WMRR office on 02 8746 5000 or email [email protected].
