The Waste Management and Resource Recovery Association of Australia (WMRR), the national peak body for all stakeholders in the waste and resource recovery industry, has welcomed the progress of Western Australia’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS).
This week, WA’s CDS reached a new milestone, with the State Government taking the scheme’s roll-out to the next step by appointing a scheme coordinator – not-for-profit organisation, WA Return Recycle Renew Limited.
“We congratulate the WA Government for taking the CDS to the next stage. WMRR has long-held and will continue to stress that an effective and cost-efficient scheme is one that offers convenient, accessible, and reliable collection points across the State,” WMRR CEO, Ms Gayle Sloan, said.
“As such, we are pleased that the State Government has also released its minimum network standards, committing to one refund point in every remote town with 500 people or more along with a range of other options for smaller communities.
“WMRR will be watching the roll-out closely and will continue to engage the Government to ensure that it delivers a scheme that is in the interest of the community and environment; a scheme that will also play a role in helping transition WA to a circular economy by creating local state-of-the-art recycling and sorting capacity to produce raw materials for remanufacturing.”
