JOANNA O'BRIEN

Joanna O’Brien has an background in engineering and joined the EPA in 2013 in the area of Contaminated Land Assessment. From here she moved to the regulation of landfills. In September 2019 Jo moved to the Policy and Business Branch Section and leads the project team charged with the legislation and implementation of a Container Refund Scheme for Tasmania.

 

GARTH LAMB

Chief Development Officer, Re.Group

Garth was hauled into the waste game as editor of Inside Waste magazine, before moving to Hyder Consulting (now Arcadis) where he headed up Australia’s leading team of strategic waste advisors. Having worked with all levels of government, and private sector operators, he understands the complexities and challenges around sustainable waste management.

In 2014 he took up a post with Re.Group, an innovate Australian company that specialises in building and operating infrastructure to recover resources from waste – part of the critical infrastructure required in any modern society. His role as the Chief Development Officer involves helping clients deliver sustainable solutions for their communities across all urban waste streams.

Re.Group’s container deposit business, Return-It, is involved in all the modern Australian schemes, and has built strong linkages with community and charity groups as it established collection points across the ACT, NSW, QLD and WA.

MARKUS FRAVAL

Director, Strategy & Business Development, TOMRA Collection Solutions Australia

Inspired by systems-based solutions to environmental sustainability, Markus has been involved in the Circular Economy for 20+ years. Initially at the United Nations’ pioneering industrial ecology program, Zero Emissions Research Initiative; later in kerbside recycling and broader extended producer responsibility schemes such as beverage container deposit schemes (CDS).  

Markus is a Director of the Australian arm of Norwegian multinational TOMRA – the leader in sensor-based sorting in the recycling and food sectors. Markus is also a Director of TOMRA Cleanaway, which as the network operator of NSW’s Return and Earn scheme is responsible for all CDS infrastructure across NSW and the recycling of all containers collected.
