Less waste to landfill, is it a nice problem to deal with?

Recovering material for recycling, reusing materials, or reducing production of waste in the first place all mean one thing - a smaller portion of material going to landfill. Ever since the first Waste Strategy nearly 15 years ago, the South Australian Government has set stretch targets to achieve a fewer tonnes going to landfill. Now on the eve of the 4th 5 year waste strategy for SA it is worth considering what does the future of landfill look like further ahead as we near zero waste to landfill?

Dr Peter Kjeldsen is an expert in this area. He has spent much of his career as a scientist researching waste stream composition and the environmental effects of waste treatment and disposal facilities.  In this presentation you will hear about Peter’s experience studying these effects over a period which has included Denmark’s move to Waste to Energy and advanced resource recovery.  Landfill is still a part of the waste management industry in Denmark however they now receive only 4% of waste produced and the nature of “waste” and this residual has changed creating new challenges for producers and operators.

This excellent presentation will provide some great insights for all participants in the industry to consider as SA moves to ever greater levels of diversion.
