QLD Women of WARR Leadership Breakfast

The Waste Management & Resource Recovery Association of Australia (WMRR) invites you to our annual QLD Women of WARR Leadership Breakfast on Thursday, 20 July 2023 at Brisbane City Hall. This event is designed to celebrate women in our industry who are driving change, and in doing so, breaking down barriers and creating new career prospects for the next generation.







Water, Sewerage & Waste Portfolio, Toowoomba Regional Council

Cr Nancy Sommerfield is in her third term as Councillor.

Nancy strives to ensure everyone is included and considered in her decision making at Council whilst urging efficient and effective use of ratepayers dollars and nurturing the environment in our beautiful Region.

Since elected in 2012 Nancy has invested passionately in the Water & Waste Portfolio, which ensures safe drinking water supply and security; efficient removal and treatment of wastewater and constantly evolving recycling and reuse of waste, reducing waste to landfill whilst also creating energy from landfill.

Nancy has also been proactive in sourcing additional funding for pest and weed management which has seen improved management of pests and weeds along with replacement and repairs to the wild dog fence. Nancy’s background, coming off a property at Cunnamulla, has held her in good stead in this area as well as understanding and supporting our regional towns and farmers.

Further to this, after moving to Toowoomba in 1994, Nancy developed a marketing career in the health sector and then moved to education where she was the Development Coordinator at Downlands College for five happy years.

Active memberships within the community have included Zonta, the YWCA and director of the Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce.

Nancy is a former board member of Fairholme College, Company Directors Course graduate, author, publisher and qualified Life Coach.

Nancy is the proud mother of two adult children and a beautiful little granddaughter. Interests over the years have included patchwork and quilting and whilst Nancy says she can’t ride to save herself she takes a keen interest in Polo, Polocrosse and other horse sports.

Jessica has over 20 years’ experience in the waste industry, filling management, consulting, and research roles. Her professional experience includes work in Canada, South East Asia, New Zealand, Australia, South America, the United Kingdom, and Europe. 

Jessica has worked for nationally recognised waste consultancies in Australia, New Zealand and the UK, and international organisations delivering projects to government and private sector clients. She has a strong track record in working with local authorities to design and implement practicable solutions to waste and resource issues. She has worked on CDM initiatives, transferring 'green' waste treatment technologies to developing nations. 

Jessica has been an active participant in the development of the Australian Government’s carbon crediting methods for landfill gas projects under both the Carbon farming initiative and the Emissions Reduction Fund. Jessica has managed LGI Limited’s carbon portfolio since 2012, and been an Executive Director since 2013. She has received various research awards, and was named Young Scientist of the Year in New Zealand in 2005 for her research into landfill geochemistry. She has consulted to the waste industry, including assisting the United Nations Environment Program with waste and climate change projects. Jessica has been the Chief Executive Officer for LGI since 2017. 




Circular Economy specialist
Honorary Consul Queensland, Kingdom of the Netherlands

Marjon is a circular economy and business strategy specialist with an extensive international background spanning over 25 years. 

Marjon was appointed as the Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of the Netherlands for Queensland in 2021. In this role, she actively fosters and strengthens the diplomatic relationship between Queensland and the Netherlands, with a particular focus on promoting trade and collaboration within the circular economy and sustainability sector. 

Since her arrival in Australia in 2017, she has applied her extensive experience to guide and support businesses in their transformation from linear to circular business models, aiming to create sustainable economic, social, and environmental benefits. Previously, she worked as a senior consultant with Coreo for four years, and most recently held the role of Manager Circular Economy at Container Exchange.
