Sally Capp - Lord Mayor of Melbourne

Sally Capp was elected Lord Mayor of Melbourne in May 2018 and was the first woman to be directly elected as Lord Mayor. Sally was also the first woman to hold the post of Agent-General for Victoria in the UK, Europe and Israel. She has also served as the CEO for the Committee for Melbourne and COO of the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Sally began her career as a Solicitor, after completing Law (Hons) and Commerce degrees at the University of Melbourne.

Sally has held senior roles at both KPMG and ANZ, and she took the small business she co-founded to the ASX. Most recently she was Victorian Executive Director of the Property Council of Australia. A passionate Magpies supporter, in 2004 Sally made history as the first female board member of Collingwood FC. She is involved in a number of charities, currently sitting on the board of the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute, the Mary Jane Lewis Scholarship Foundation and the Melbourne University Faculty of Business and Economics.

Caroline Lambert - First Counsellor, Climate and Environment Policies, Delegation of the European Union to Australia

Since March 2015, Caroline Lambert is the European Union's Climate and Environment Counsellor in Australia. Before being posted to Australia, Caroline worked for five years in the private office of the European Commissioner for Climate Action, where she advised on financial, trade and taxation matters and on adaptation policy. Caroline entered the European Union's civil service in 2000 and initially worked in the Energy, Transport, Communications and Budget Departments. Early in her career, Caroline did strategic communications and public affairs work in the energy and environment sector for European businesses and commodities. She holds a post-graduate diploma in European Political Science from the College of Europe (Bruges, Belgium) where she was awarded first prize of the year. She has a MA with highest honours in International Relations, Economics and Law from Sciences Po Paris and graduated in International Economics from Paris X University.

Dr Marcus Gover - Chief Executive Officer, WRAP UK

Marcus Gover has worked in the environment sector for over 25 years and is currently Chief Executive Officer of WRAP in the UK. WRAP is a not-for profit organisation working with governments, businesses and citizens to create a world in which resources are used sustainability. Its experts generate evidence-based solutions to protect the environment, build stronger economies and support more sustainable societies. WRAP’s impact spans the entire life-cycle of the food we eat, the clothes we wear and the products we buy, from production to consumption and beyond. 

Professor Ross Garnaut - Professorial Research Fellow in Economics, University of Melbourne

Professor Garnaut is a Professorial Research Fellow in Economics at the University of Melbourne. He is the author of numerous publications in scholarly journals on international economics, public finance and economic development, particularly in relation to East Asia and the Southwest Pacific.

Professor Garnaut has had longstanding and successful roles as policy advisor, diplomat and businessman. He was the senior economic policy official in Papua New Guinea’s Department of Finance in the years straddling Independence in 1975, principal economic adviser to Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke 1983-1985, and Australian Ambassador to China 1985-1988.

Amélie Rouvin - Environment & Circular Economy Manager, Veolia Group

With 169,000 employees in more than 40 countries, Veolia is the global leader in optimised resource management, designs and provides water, waste and energy management solutions to communities and industries.

Amélie is responsible for defining the Environmental Objectives Plan for the Veolia Group for 2020 and was in charge of the coordination of the Paris Agreement, COP21 on climate change for the Veolia Group. She is also the liaison Delegate for the Veolia Group at the WBCSD (World Business Council for Sustainable Development) and for the Circular Economy Program called "Factor10" notably on the metrics.

Amélie has a background in Business Development & Marketing. Prior to joining the Waste division of the Veolia Group 13 years ago Amélie worked in the French NGO for Sustainable Development (Comité21), starting as manager on the ground. In 2016 Amélie published a report at the WBCSD on Circular Economy entitled "Unlocking more value with fewer resources"..

Arthur Huang - Chief Executive Officer, Miniwiz

Arthur is a structural engineer, architect and pioneer of loop economy building material solutions,
specialised in post-consumer trash recycling applications to help shift mass consumption to a close-loop model. In 2005, he established Miniwiz, a company dedicated to up-cycling and consumer trash and industrial waste reuse innovation.

Under Arthur Huang’s leadership, Miniwiz has pushed boundaries beyond all expectations, winning the company the Financial Times’ Earth Award in 2010 and The Wall Street Journal’s Asian Innovation Award in 2011. In 2015, Miniwiz received the Technology Pioneers title by the World Economic Forum, recognising the potential of the emerging industry that Miniwiz is leading and the positive impact of its innovation on altering and adapting global consumption patterns.

Bob Gordon - Sustainability and Purpose Manager, Nando’s Australia

Bob Gordon has worked in sustainability in the retail and hospitality sector for over 15 years. He has led Nando’s sustainability agenda for 6 years, in the UK and more recently in Australia. Bob’s focus is on environmental sustainability, social impact and business purpose.

Vaughan Levitzke - Chief Executive, Green Industries SA

Vaughan has more than 35 years’ experience in government, project management and leadership. He is responsible for a multitude of programs and projects carried out by Zero Waste SA and its partner organisations that has seen SA establish its leadership credentials in waste management and recycling in Australia and internationally.

Vaughan spent 10 years with the South Australian EPA in a number of roles, including regulation of tyres, and composting, overseeing and expanding container deposit legislation, and industry resource efficiency programs.

In 2015 he received a Public Service Medal for outstanding public service in the area of waste management reform and policy.

Mark Venhoek - Chief Executive Officer, SUEZ Australia and New Zealand

Mark Venhoek has been Chief Executive Officer of SUEZ in Australia and New Zealand since July 2015. Mark began his career in waste management in 1992 when he spotted an advertisement in the newspaper in the Netherlands for “an interesting job” in waste. Since then, he has gained significant global experience across the SUEZ group, spanning the European, Asian and Australian markets. Most recently, Mark led SUEZ’s waste management operations across Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, mainland China and South-East Asia.

Daniel Tartak - Chief Executive Officer, Bingo Industries

Daniel Tartak is the CEO of Bingo Industries Ltd, a waste management business listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) with a market capitalisation of approximately $1.2 billion. Daniel’s involvement with Bingo began when he was 19 driving trucks. Daniel is an inspirational leader who has grown with the company and has pioneered the new strategic direction that has successfully expanded Bingo’s bespoke recycling centres and quintessential collections fleet across NSW and Victoria. Daniel is now leading the process to disrupt the status quo and drive positive change across the recycling and waste management industry in Australia.


Jon Dee - Anchor Host, Smart Money

Jon Dee is an award-winning broadcaster, campaigner and social entrepreneur. He has played a major role in the mainstreaming of recycling and waste minimisation. On Sky News Business channel, Jon presented 115 episodes of the ‘Smart Money’ business sustainability TV programme. It was the first programme to look at how Australian businesses could be part of the ‘circular economy’. His guidebooks ‘Sustainable Growth’, ‘EnergyCut’ and ‘EnergySmart’ have showed how businesses can save money by being more efficient and less wasteful in their use of raw materials and energy. In 1991, Jon co-founded Planet Ark with Pat Cash. In that role he initiated and launched National Recycling Week and .


Jim Appleby - General Manager Reconomy, Downer

Jim Appleby has over 30 years’ experience in the road infrastructure, and civil engineering industries. Jim graduated from Leeds University in 1991 and spent the first 25 years of his career in the UK before relocating to Australia. Jim is currently General Manager – Reconomy for Downer. Reconomy is focused on opportunities within the Circular Economy, namely Repurposing and Waste Reduction. Jim has strong expertise in the areas of strategic business management, team leadership, and complex contract delivery.

David Berry - Director/General Manager, Eco Guardians

David Berry is an experienced Oil & Gas industry professional having worked in a variety of engineering and management roles for 20 years with Shell Oil in Australia, Asia Pacific and Mesa regions. As Technical Director and General Manager for Eco Guardians he provides support for business focused solutions, specialising in the technical brief at design stage, review and on-site commissioning including operations and maintenance training. Eco Guardians provide sustainable solutions for a variety of waste streams with a key specialisation in food waste.

Will Brook - General Manager – Sustainability, Brookfarm

Will Brook leads Brookfarm’s Sustainability Program and chairs the Northern Rivers Food Sustainability committee. He has a passion for food manufacture, sustainability, the environment and is a driving force in NSW Northern Rivers food industry. Will and his family regenerated a rundown dairy farm into a thriving rainforest eco-system and environmentally managed macadamia orchard. Will has driven a range of projects which have lead regional innovation in carbon footprint reduction and zero-waste food production and continues to drive innovation in sustainable packaging with supply partners, with a number of projects currently in development. In 2015, Brookfarm won the Green Globe Award for Small Business Sustainability and the prestigious Premiers Award for Environmental Excellence.

Zoltan Csaki - Co-Founder, Citizen Wolf

After studying Visual Communications at UTS, Zoltan ended up as an advertising creative despite his father’s best efforts to have an accountant in the family. For the next 7 years he worked for the world’s biggest agencies and brands in the corporate world between Sydney, London, and Amsterdam. Tired of much talk within Adland, he quit in 2009 to make a collaborative mood board SaaS tool called MoodShare. After modest traction he then moved on to his second start up The Affair. Zoltan is a self-aught fashion designer who values classic silhouettes and premium build quality over throw-away season trends, he believes the traditional business of Fashion is deeply flawed and sees vertical integrated models that put customers first as the future.

Brooke Donnelly - Chief Executive officer, Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation

Brooke Donnelly is a senior strategic and commercial executive specialising in product stewardship, recycling and sustainability. She has led successful operational and commercial implementation of best practice national product stewardship and recycling programs for industry, government and consumers. In her current role as CEO at the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO), Brooke develops and leads there strategic direction and vision, which enables businesses, government and industry to design and utilise more sustainable packaging throughout the supply chain to reduce environmental impact.

Justin Dowel - Managing Director, Natures Organics

Justin Dowel started with Natures Organics in 1992 having worked in the family business throughout his childhood. Keeping to those core values has been instrumental in driving the company’s success whether its developing new plant based raw materials or being the first to manufacture long life products in PLA Bio Plastic. Since 1994, Natures Organics purchased its first Aoki two stage injection blow moulding machine which incorporated 100% post-consumer recycled plastic into its production. To this day Natures Organics has never wavered its commitment to recycled plastic leading it to become Australia’s largest user of Post-Consumer recycled PET plastic. Every bottle of the 50,000,000 that we produce each year for Earth Choice, Organic Care and Fruits brands are made from 100% post-consumer recycled PET plastic.

Nick Edgerton - Fund Manager, Stewart Investors Sustainable Funds

Nick is responsible for generating investment ideas and portfolio decisions for the Stewart Investors Sustainable Funds group across all sectors in emerging and developed markets. As well as analysis and investment, this role includes engagement with company management and proxy voting. He joined the team in 2012 following two years in the First State Investments group. Nick previously worked as an analyst with the Sustainability funds at AMP Capital Investors, and has experience as a consultant, public servant, and academic in sustainability and economics.

Prof Damien Giurco - Professor of Resource Futures and Director (Innovation), Institute for Sustainable Futures, University of Technology Sydney

Damien Giurco is Professor of Resource Futures and Director (Innovation) at the Institute for Sustainable Futures, University of Technology Sydney. His work with government and industry focuses on resource stewardship and he led the Wealth from Waste Cluster, a collaborative research program supporting circular economy pathways and policies for metals. He is experienced in stakeholder workshop design and facilitation.

Michelle Keam - Sustainability Compliance Reviewer - Group Sustainability, IKEA Pty Ltd

Michelle Keam has grown up preoccupied with the need to protect the natural world and its people. Michelle studied Psychology and a Masters of Business Sustainability, and has worked with various not-for-profits developing their environmental strategies. Michelle then found herself at a global business, IKEA, where she specialised in energy, water, sustainable travel, and the circular economy. Now, back at IKEA Australia Michelle educates IKEA’s suppliers on IKEA’s Code of Conduct (IWAY). Michelle is motivated by having a platform at IKEA to encourage and help people to make more sustainable choices, and wants to do more with her role to embed sustainability further into the IKEA Australia’s operations. Michelle is a current participant in the Centre for Sustainability Leaders Future Makers Fellowship 2018.

Garth Lamb - Business Development Manager, Re.Group

Garth began in the industry more than a decade ago as a journalist and editor of Inside Waste magazine, followed by four years working with Hyder consulting as the National Business Leader for the waste and resource management team. Throughout his career, Mr Lamb has worked with all levels of government, the private sector and individuals involved in the waste and resource recovery sector. He has been a WMAA member throughout his career and in 2016 was elected as the WMAA NSW Branch President and in 2017 become the National President of WMAA.

Ben Mason - Senior Economist, Arup

Ben Mason is an economist based in Arup’s Melbourne office and he has previously worked for the firm in Cardiff and Abu Dhabi. He is an accredited Better Business Cases Practitioner and works on a broad range of projects in the infrastructure and cities space. Ben is passionate about using economics to drive meaningful change and is particularly interested in the potential applications for the circular economy. To this end, he has recently worked with both the City of Melbourne and Monash University to explore their opportunities to transition to a circular economy.

Bernadette McCabe - National Centre for Engineering in Agriculture, University of Southern Queensland (USQ)

Associate Professor Bernadette McCabe is a principal scientist with NCEA at USQ and is Australia's National Team Leader for the International Energy Agency Bioenergy program Task 37: Energy from Biogas. Bernadette has a background in agricultural biotechnology and has 20 years’ experience as an academic and researcher. She is an Advance Queensland Mid-Career Research Fellow working in partnership with NH Foods Australia, Oakey Beef Exports. Her research interest in energy capture, resource recovery of waste and biofertilisers has attracted over $2.9M national grants since 2010. Her research has been applied to the livestock and cropping sectors (both on and off farm) and water utilities.

Helen Millicer - One Planet Consulting, Churchill Fellow

Helen Millicer, GAICD is a consultant and manager of national sustainability programs. Helen delivers strategy, research and communications for government, industry and not-for-profit organisations, and presents on future challenges and opportunities relating to waste, recycling, energy, carbon and water. Helen is also Board Director on the Loddon Mallee Waste and Resource Recovery Group, President of the Alternative Technology Association, Banksia Judge and Expert Panel Member for the Victorian Government.

Dr Monique Retamal - Research Principal, Institute for Sustainable Futures, University of Technology Sydney

Monique Retamal is a Research Principal at ISF, with a background in environmental engineering and ten years’ experience in urban sustainability research. Monique’s PhD investigated the sustainability of collaborative consumption in Southeast Asian cities. During the “Wealth from Waste” research cluster for CSIRO, Monique researched business models and strategies for a circular economy for metals in Australia and policy options for product longevity. She is also currently developing a workshop to engage the fast-moving consumer goods industry in India regarding packaging sustainability.

Luke Sarsons - Climate Change & Sustainability, Arup

Luke Sarsons is Arup’s foresight lead for Melbourne and a senior sustainability and climate change consultant. He has over a decade of experience in both Australian and international contexts delivering climate change and sustainability planning for communities, most recently with the United Nations Development Program in Bangladesh. His current work has him supporting local governments, water corporations, property developers and the Victorian Government to understand key sustainability challenges and drivers of change, and equipping them with the tools necessary to build long term resilience.

Karl Shanley - Acting Manager | Resource Recovery Strategies & Programs, Sustainability Victoria

Karl Shanley leads the implementation of Sustainability Victoria’s Market Development Strategy for Recovered Resources, working across the Victorian environment portfolio to deliver market interventions that support Victoria’s policy and regulatory framework. These interventions include research and development projects; product specification development; and, supporting national product stewardship initiatives. In addition to state government, Karl has worked in environmental management roles in local government and lectured in environmental studies at RMIT University.

Peter Shmigel - Chief Executive Officer, Australian Council of Recycling

Pete Shmigel has over 25 years of diverse experience in environmental sustainability, politics, business, consulting and mental health. Prior to ACOR, he’s proudly served as CEO of Lifeline Australia, the Buy Recycled Business Alliance, and the Beverage Industry Environment Council, and in senior roles with Veolia and Nolan-ITU. He’s also been a senior advisor to nine Premiers and Ministers, including most recently in Ukraine. Pete’s a voluntary Board member with Australian Men’s Health Forum, Baseball Australia, and Roses in the Ocean, and volunteers on the phones at Lifeline.

Angela Stubbs - Team Leader, Kingston City Council

Angela Stubbs has held a senior position in the Economic Growth & Innovation department at the City of Kingston for the past 8 years. Business sustainability and industrial symbiosis are a focus for her work with Kingston businesses in the Melbourne Kingston region, which has a large manufacturing base. In collaboration with 4 founding council partners and CSIRO, she lead a project team in 2014 to establish a ‘proof of concept’ for an innovative online waste materials exchange register, now called ASPIRE. It enables businesses to divert waste streams from landfill by finding alternative solutions for reusing or recycling their resource material.

Lacey Webb - Senior Consultant, Mandalay Technologies

Lacey Webb is an experienced Waste Industry CFO and Systems Implementation expert, joining the industry in 2006 and having previously spearheaded teams within Finance, Administration, IT and Waste Operations. Her industry experience spans landfills, transfer stations, large scale recycling facilities and quarries, and most recently she has joined Mandalay Technologies as their Commercial Strategy and Compliance Expert, servicing Australian commercial and municipal waste facilities with a particular focus on regulation, risk & compliance.

Mark Yates - Founder and Director of R&D, Repeat Plastics

Mark Yates is the founder of Repeat Plastics and also director of R&D, he started his working life as an apprentice electrician specialising in automation and motor control and is still fully qualified in this trade. Post apprenticeship Mark worked as a project manager for a high tech heat treatment company building and installing environmentally friendly Heat treatment plants throughout Asia. Getting tired of living outside Australia, 22 years ago Mark started developing unique technology to process mixed plastic waste. This was the start of Repeat Plastics and now Replas are world leaders in this area. The whole concept of sustainability sits well with Mark and he is happy to be part of a sustainable business that is here for the long haul.
