Mrs Hand-Smith is a highly qualified Chartered Engineer with 30 years international experience in the Energy from Waste Sector. She is the Chair of the Victorian WMRR Energy from Waste Working Group and sits on the Australian National Energy from Waste Committee. Originally from the UK Gillian acted as technical expert to all the EU member nations technical experts on the European Incineration Directive at the European Commission in Brussels, this now being rolled into the current Industrial Emissions Directive. This was subsequently included in EPA Victoria’s Incineration Guidelines on which Gillian was a Consultee. She has extensive global experience of technology reviews and due diligence assessments for energy waste technology plant including gasification, pyrolysis, combustion, digestion, co-digestion, etc. Gillian has recently prepared consultation comment on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 2019 Guidelines refinement in relation to GHG emissions from energy from waste and waste generally for the Australian Government on behalf of WMRR. Gillian is a keen advocate of Circular Economy solutions and sustainability principles and has developed numerous sustainability frameworks and scorecards to promote circular principles in Europe and Australasia including in the water sector.
